UTIs are one of the most common presentations in general practice and registered nurses are well-placed to lead their management.

Acute uncomplicated cystitis follows a predictable clinical pattern and responds reliably to first-line antibiotics making it an ideal presentation for nurse-led management. In a general practice setting, where GP demand consistently outpaces capacity, a well-governed nurse-led UTI service means patients are seen more quickly, GPs are freed for more complex presentations, and registered nurses are practising at the level their training supports. With the introduction of the NMBA Designated Registered Nurse Prescriber endorsement from September 2025, the pathway for nurses to lead this care independently has never been clearer.
