Nurse-Led Management Of Medical Termination Of Pregnancy

Registered nurses are well-placed to work collaboratively with GPs and NPs to facilitate medical termination of pregnancy in general practice settings. Grounded in current clinical guidelines, this program builds assessment skills, clinical knowledge, and the governance framework needed to support nurse-led care delivery.
This activity has been endorsed by APNA according to approved quality standards criteria. Completion of this educational activity entitles eligible participants to claim 8 CPD hours.

Abortion is one of the most common procedures in reproductive healthcare. The large majority of abortions occur in the first trimester, and an increasing proportion are medical terminations provided in community settings, including general practice

In a general practice setting, where GP demand consistently outpaces capacity, a well-governed nurse-led MTOP service means patients are seen more quickly, GPs are freed for more complex presentations, and registered nurses are practising at the level their training supports. With the introduction of the NMBA Designated Registered Nurse Prescriber endorsement from September 2025, the pathway for nurses to lead this care independently has never been clearer.
